For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. Exodus 20:11

What is a week, besides seven days? It starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday, we all agree on that if we check most calendars. Saturday is the seventh day or the end of the week. But how did we arrive at a week being seven days?

We know that a day is determined by the rotation of the earth. A day is approximately 24 hours in length because that is how long it takes the earth to revolve on its axis. This is proven by science and simply by our own observation.

A month is determined by the rotation of the moon around the earth, or at least it was in ancient times. This takes approximately 28 days, so that is how the months were originally set.

We all know that a year is determined by the amount of time it takes the earth to take a trip around the sun. This length of time is approximately 365 1/4 days. So all of these three lengths of time can be explained by science.

But not a week! A week has no scientific explanation at all. Or does it? Our world, everything on it, everything around it, including us (people) we’re created by God as told in Genesis 1! This chapter defines the creation of everything that is, culminating with the creation of man (and woman) on the sixth day. And when God was finished with creation he looked upon it and saw that it was very good!

So God created everything in six days, but he wasn’t finished yet. He had one more thing to do before His creation was completed. God gave us the Sabbath. His day of rest, the seventh day and now His creation was complete. It took Him six literal days to create everything and then He rested, not because He needed rest, but to set an example for us, to remind us that we needed to rest and spend one day with Him on the seventh day, the Sabbath.

But He also gave us one more thing that science cannot give us, and cannot be explained in any other way, the week! The creation of everything with the Sabbath added on is seven days and that is how we define a week on our calendars. Nowhere in science can we find a way to define or explain a week, the only definition of a week comes from the Bible, and even non-believers have no other explanation.

So while a day, month and year are fully explainable using science, if you want to discount God and creation, a week has its origins in the first book of the Bible and nowhere else. Our God created everything in a week and gave us His gift so that we would never forget it.

God bless
