Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Luke 6:31 (NIV)
Editors Note: My most sincere apologies. This post has been in my head for weeks and I struggled to write it down. I’ve also been extremely busy and being pulled in one direction or another and have been unable to focus on getting this completed. I have a couple of other partially completed posts and I hope to get them done so they can be posted on a regular schedule.
Footprints is one of the most famous poems in the world. Written by Margaret Fishback Powers in 1964, although authorship is disputed. It tells the story of a man walking in the sand with Jesus. Their footprints are left in the sand side by side, but at some points, there is only one set of prints. The man asks Jesus why He abandoned him at the worst parts of his life, but Jesus tells him it was at that point that Jesus carried him.
I’ve seen this poem everywhere from churches to people’s basements and beyond. I’ve even heard it mentioned by non-believers. This poem has a lot of traction, but what does it really mean?
As we go through our troubles in life we should turn to Jesus to help us. He is there for us at all times. All we need to do is ask for him. He will walk alongside us. But when things get really bad He no longer walks alongside us, He carries us and so therefore there is now only one set of footprints.

Do you allow Him to be with you at all times in your day? Is He there for you when you need Him, and do you allow Him to carry you through your worst days? As many of you know, just over 4 years ago in 2019 I went through a terrible illness and its effects continue to this day. The illness, Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) attacks the nervous system and it left me laying paralyzed and on a ventilator to keep me alive. This was a terrifying experience and even looking back today, it is hard to comprehend this illness and how badly it affected me.
Through this illness my faith and my wife’s faith never waivered, in fact, it grew stronger as we prayed and began to see the results of the prayers. And it was not just our prayers that were at work, it was the prayers of our friends and family, it was the prayers of our church members, and it was the prayers of complete strangers who had heard about what I was going through and were praying for me. God heard all those prayers and laid His healing hands upon me and continues to do that today.
In the Old Testament, there is a character named Job, who went through a terrible trial when Satan felt he had more power than God. God allowed Job to be subjected to terrible trials and he never lost his faith, even when everything else, including his family, was taken from him. Job knew that God was there to carry him through his trials, and I knew it too!
The poem, Footprints, is exactly that! It is about Jesus taking us when we are at our lowest, and carrying us to help us along the way. God doesn’t abandon us at those times, He picks us up and carries us. He knows when we need Him the most and He is there for us, we just need to learn to call upon Him.
God Bless.
